Pool Chemical Testers – Test Methods

Pool chemical testers come in various forms both in a manual, as well as a semi automated form for testing the chemical levels in water samples. Pool water chemicals should be tested every day, and this applies to private residential pools as well as public pools. Public pools should be tested more often especially on hot days with many people using the pool. The chemicals in public pools will breakdown more quickly due to heavy use and many contaminants in the pool from hair spray to deodorant to body oils. Continuous monitoring is even better for these types of situations, since the water can turn cloudy very quickly.

Manual test methods of chemicals involve adding droplets of test reagents into a test tube and observing the colour of the water compared to a test range on the side of the test tube. The manual method is reasonably accurate for testing chemicals such as chlorine and bromine in pools. These pool chemical testers are also quite inexpensive as well making it quite affordable to test the water in your pool often.

Semi automated chemical testers tend to provide a more accurate reading of chemical levels in the pools. After reagents are added to the test tube the test tube is placed in a slot in the chemical tester for testing. Pressing the test button on the pool chemical tester activates the test procedure and the tester provides a read out on the meter on the tester. These testers can provide readings down to the five mg/l level. Since this is a more accurate reading, chemical levels can also be maintained more accurately as well.
