Pool Water Disinfectors – Management Requirements

All pool owners and organizations that provide clean sanitized water for the food and beverage industry understand the requirements of safe handling of disinfectors, sanitizers and chlorine chemicals. Failure to properly handle pool water disinfectors and sanitizers can cause disastrous consequences for the person handling the chemicals, as well as for anyone in the immediate area of the accident. Without proper training in the handling of disinfectants, sanitizers and other chemicals, your employees or friends and family may be at risk.

Chlorine has been used as a traditional pool water disinfector and sanitizer for pools and drinking water. Although some people do not like the smell of chlorine that is in drinking water, we depend on this disinfector to act as a sanitizer for drinking water. Owners of pools should always mix the chlorine disinfector with water and not the other way around to avoid any chance of producing a chlorine gas cloud.

Many pool owners will take a pail of water and then slowly mix chlorine particles into the water making sure that they do not accidentally allow any droplets of water to mix with the chlorine powder, which could generate chlorine gas. Chlorine is a great sanitizer and disinfectant for pools and for water purification plants, but it must be used properly.
