Pool Pump Motors – Electronics Improve Safety
Pool pump motors come in various sizes and models and all are designed to work with a specific size of pool. The essential requirement of a pool pump is that it circulates the water in the pool through the filter and chlorinator (if one is attached) and back to the pool. Water must be circulated so that all of the water in the pool is pumped through the filter a specific number of times every day. Your pool dealer will make sure that you select the right size of pump for your purposes. If you are planning on adding a solar heater, where the water needs to be pumped though it or a gas heater, make sure that the dealer is aware of this so that you select the proper size of pool motors for water circulation.
In the past the pool pump motor was a pretty simple device, designed only to pump water. If situations developed such as low water or a clogged water intake, the pool pump motor would run dry, over heat and eventually burn out. Another situation that sometimes develops is that the pump shaft will seize and the motor works under a much heavier load, causing the pumps electrical motor to again burn out.
There are new devices that are gradually becoming available on the market that can help prevent damage to the motor and shut it down before the motor is overheated and causes long term damage. The motor electronics are attached to the electrical input of the pump and will sense when the motor is running under heavy load or a very light load as in a dry pump. If either of these conditions exists the pump is shut down until someone can examine and correct whatever problem could have damaged the pump motor on your pool.
