Installing Pool Covers – Enhance Energy Savings
The best time to install a pool cover is when the pool is being designed so that the pool cover and the track that it will run on will be out of site when not in use. Installing pool covers after a pool has been installed is more difficult and expensive, especially if you want the it out of site when it is open.
By installing a pool cover, you can save a great deal in energy costs, water evaporation and chemical loss to the sunlight. Pool covers will reduce the evaporation by as much as 90% when in place and save as much as 200 gallons of water a week depending on the size and the climate. When the pool cover is in place, it also reduces the sun’s ability to breakdown the chlorine in the pool making it last longer. The water stays warmer and the debris such as windblown dirt stays out of the pool when the cover is in place.
If you install a pool cover after your pool is in place, it may end up sitting on top of the pools deck and you may also need to have some sort of roll away mechanism to move it out of sight. This can be unsightly and cumbersome to use so not many people will use these types of covers. Solar blankets are popular as well, however they are bulky and unsightly as well when they are rolled up and not being used.
