Inground Swimming Pools – Vinyl, Gunite or Fibreglass

There are three types of inground swimming pools that are typically interred for customers in their backyards. The choice of pool depends on a number of factors such as size of the backyard, access to your backyard for swimming pool installation, winter temperatures and exposure to freezing, personal preferences for a swimming pool type.

The inground swimming pool can be built with a vinyl liner, with gunite or installed with a fibreglass shell. All interred pools work well and some have advantages that may be of interest to you depending on your personal needs. Vinyl lined pools have a sand or cement bottom and steel sides supported with braces. They come in standard shapes and sizes and they have a vinyl liner that is installed and then filled with water.

Gunite swimming pools use a material called gunite to line the bottom and sides of the pool. Gunite is a special high strength cement that will withstand water and will cure under water. A major advantage of Gunite swimming pools is that they can be purchased and interred in just about any shape you can imagine.

Fibreglass pools are installed as one piece. They arrive on a flatbed and are lifted into place by a crane and dropped into the base of the hole that has been dug in the shape of the swimming pool. Once all electrical and plumbing has been attached to the fibreglass shell, the water can be added to the interred pool and sand must be added at the same time along the outside of the pool. One disadvantage of fibre pools is that access to the backyard for installation is required by a crane to lift the fibre shell into place.
