Swimming Pool Pumps – How They Work

Swimming pool pumps provide circulation of the water in your swimming pool to help clean the water of any dirt that gets , as well as mix the various chemicals that are required from time to time. The swimming pool pump and the filter come in pairs and are usually matched in filter size or capacity to the power of the pump and the size of the pool. For example, small above ground pools have no need for a large filter with a corresponding large pump. However, any swimming pool needs to have all of the water circulated at least once every eight hours to ensure adequate mixing of chemicals and cleaning of the pool, making for a fun swim.

Pools come with a skimmer at the pools edge and the pool pump will also have a basket to catch larger items so that the impeller and the filter are not damaged. Routine daily inspection of pools is usually a good idea to confirm nothing has become lodged in the skimmer basket.

Pool owners planning to run solar heaters placed on the roof of their house may require a slightly more powerful pump to handle the increased circulation requirements. Some owners will place their pump and filter away from the pool. This cuts down on the noise from the pump and allows swimmers to enjoy their swim more in the summer. The combination of solar heating and the distance from the pool can add up to a stronger pump being required to circulate the right amount of water through the pool, keeping it clean and enjoyable to swim in.
